Vintage 1950s Vogue Couturier Design Circular Cape Sleeve Top

A beautifully constructed circa late-1950s tunic top, individually made from a Vogue Couturier Design sewing pattern. The woven fabric has a fluid drape and a stylized floral-and-linear print in warm tan, brown, teal blue, slate grey and ivory. Shaped closely through the bodice and waist, the top flares slightly over the hips to create a longline silhouette.

The circular cape sleeves are the defining feature, forming sculptural, fan-like shapes that move beautifully with the wearer. Concealed snap fastenings secure the front, while delicate thread belt loops allow the waist to be further defined with a narrow belt.

Please note that the neckline is considerably more modest when the top is completely fastened. It could not be fully closed on the mannequin because the mannequin was too large; the hanger photograph shows its true depth of neckline.

The Vogue Couturier Design label was supplied for use in garments sewn from Vogue patterns. Its presence indicates an individually made piece rather than a Vogue ready-to-wear garment. The particular label design dates to the late 1950s, although the original pattern number and any associated designer have not been identified. Vogue Couturier Design featured designers from other countries like Pertegaz of Spain; Fabiani, Simonetta and Federico Forquet of Italy; or Michael of England.
